Jewish nonprofits have rarely distinguished themselves in the field of money management. As a volunteer in the field for over 25 years, I have seen all of the dysfunction up close: development officers who nominate donors for the investment committee, money managers being proposed by board members with conflicts, asset allocation decisions being made by committees without credentialed volunteers staffed by professionals without relevant experience. And, worst of all, deliberating on these issues less than six hours a year! Having set out to professionalize the money management field in the 1980's and 1990's, I decided to try to do the same in the Jewish Endowment, Donor Advised Fund and Family Foundation (JEDF) market in the 2000's. I launched JCEP in 1997 which transformed the Boston JEDF market and I went on to start JEFII (the Jewish Endowment and Foundation Investment Institute) for Jewish Federations of North America. Click below for the JCEP case study I presented in February 2015 at the JFNA Investment Institute.
